Red Lentil and Bulgur Balls (Kebe/Kufte) with Mint Tomato Salad

This was a quick weeknight meal… I decided to make this last night because it was quick, kid-friendly, healthy and most important tasty.

But before I share the recipe, I want to share with you some Halloween artwork.

As I was uploading my recent pics from our camera, I came across some photos of my daughters’ Halloween drawings and thought it would be fun to post.

Halloween Grandpa

Art by Ariana ( my 5 year old)

Ariana tried drawing my dad in his Halloween costume dressed up as a girl.  She told me that the blue patches on his face are his tears for being dressed in a dress.   I thought her drawing looked more like Frankenstein.  I can’t get over her imagination.

Art by Anabelle (my 9 year old)

Anabelle was on a row and she had drawn series of Halloween pictures.  This is just one of the drawings that was in the camera.  She was obsessed with Halloween this year and did not want it to end.  She was talking and planning for a whole month and was super excited when Halloween finally arrived.

Now back to the recipe…

This is a recipe that my Grandma/Mom usually make during  Easter lent, but I love having it more than just for lent.  I think you need to serve it with something savory such as pickles or salad.  I grew up having this ever since I can remember, but I have never attempted making it myself since I rely on my Mom making it for me.   I had no idea it was so simple.

The tomato mint salad sounds great with these. We have red lentil kofte here, usually with dill added but I find the dill can be a bit overpowering sometimes. (Love the drawings.)

I think I would love it fried… thanks for making me think this way. We eat falabel and kebe with meat fried, so I am sure these will be perfect as well. However, I don’t think I can tag the recipe as healthy anymore. haha

We do this a little differently, but it’s one of my comfort foods. In fact, I don’t even bother shaping it but just plop it on a plate like mashed potatoes. I love it with a green vinaigrette salad. Now I’ll have to make it!

  • Frombuenosairestoparis

Thanks for sharing with us a part of you family life !!! and the recipe is THE latest fashion here in Europe !! Well done!

The drawings are adorable, I have a friend that had drawings from 3 kids all over the house, and she didn’t know what to do with it and didn’t want to trough them away. So I suggested for her to buy non expensive classic black picture frame, and have some of the best drawings on a wall like a gallery.
The kids loved it, they felt like real artists. And the house was more organized. I don’t know if you have this problem but thought about to share that with you. The minty tomato salad and the lentil balls looks delicious. Have a great week Adelina.

Guess what? I just made them, and they’re so incredibly delicious!! I baked mine though after I formed the little balls. They were good the way you did it, but I wanted mine crunchy…kind of like falafel. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing such a wonderful recipe!! 🙂 Cheers! sheila
