This Thanksgiving I decided to change up the usual cranberry sauce by adding just a few more ingredients such as lemon, orange, apples, cloves and orange liquor.
I think the combination of the added ingredients helps to bring down the bitterness of the cranberries and makes a perfect side to serve up with Turkey.
Recipe:
Ingredients:
Makes: about 6 cups
- 2-3 cups sugar (depending on your preference for sweets)
- 2 cups apple juice
- 1 large orange, juiced
- zest of 1 orange
- 1/2 lemon juiced
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cloves
- 32 oz. fresh cranberry
- 1/3 cup orange liquor
Directions:
In a large saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugar with orange, apple and lemon juice. Add in the ground cloves, cinnamon sticks, orange zest and stir in the cranberries. Cook until they start to pop for about 7 to 10 minutes. Add in the orange liquor and cook for another few minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool down.
Cook’s note: the cranberry sauce will thicken as it starts cooling down.
